Job Description

The Atlantic is seeking a full-time, experienced, weekend editor for its section dedicated to essays, commentary, and opinion. The ideal candidate will be eager to seek out broadly varied perspectives, entrepreneurial in spotting opportunities to shape public debates, and excited to work with a diverse array of authors. This editor should have a strong track record of editing personal essays, op-ed style contributions, or works of news analysis. The editor will be expected to solicit contributions, review pitches, and assign essays that contextualize major news stories in real-time as they unfold, with all the urgency that requires.

The editor will likewise need to focus attention on long-running debates and neglected topics in ways that render them freshly relevant and engaging. Their work will range broadly across topics, from the newsworthy to the whimsical. Demonstrated experience in helping first-time authors frame their arguments and evidence for general audiences will be particularly valued.

The editor will work either Wednesday to Sunday, or Saturday to Wednesday.
