Senior Database Infrastructure Engineer

Job Description

Etsy is seeking a Senior Database Infrastructure Engineer to join the Database Infrastructure team and help build and maintain the tools and infrastructure that directly impact the productivity of our engineering organization. The Database Infra team owns the MySQL, Memcached, and Redis backends at Etsy. The team focuses on data integrity, availability, and latency, with an eye towards automation and efficiency. They provide a proven and stable data foundation for developers to build a stack upon. We’re looking for people who excel at working with others, challenge the status-quo, and are extraordinary problem-solvers. We value clear communication, honest feedback, and empathy for the users of our services. This is a full-time role in Brooklyn, New York, Dublin, Ireland, or remote in the US.

About the Role

• Build automation tooling that directly mitigate repeatable challenges that the team faces.
• Evaluate and integrate open source software into our toolset.
• Iterate on existing tooling and evaluate where refactor or replacement is in our best interest.
• Work with other team members on code reviews.
• All team members participate in an on-call rotation for the services we support.
• We solve problems and work as a distributed team.
• Empathy, communication, and technical skills are valued equally.

About You

• You have 5+ years of infrastructure automation (infra as code).
• You are proficient in Go or PHP (Python is a plus).
• You have experience with Linux administration.
• You are comfortable with cloud infrastructure (Google Cloud or AWS).
• You value and frequently commit to distributed version control systems (Git).
• You have a “leave it better than you found it” mentality, and are willing to work with and improve on code you did not originally write.
• You love to experiment and use data to drive decision making.
• You understand that being an effective software engineer is as much about communicating with people as it is about writing code.
• Experience in Ansible or Chef for automation and workflow development is a plus.
• You are comfortable working in an Agile environment, participating in sprint planning, delivering work and contributing to a retrospective.
