This position is responsible for the nursing management of patients being sedated in association with procedures. The nurse provides direct patient care, consults with physicians and other nurses, and sets clinical standards and is involved in education activities. Serves as a member of the clinic emergency response team. This position reports to the Nurse Manager, Procedure Suite and Pulmonary Function.
Responsibilities
Administers sedating agents:
- Performs a nursing assessment prior to each patient’s sedation and procedure which includes review of relevant lab studies, review of systems, assessment of sedation related risk factors, prior anesthesia history, assessment of airway and level of consciousness
- Follows all procedures related to sedation and demonstrates and understanding of the use of appropriate reversal agents and methods for accessing airways
- Successfully initiates intravenous access and safely administers agents
- Provides patient and family teaching about sedation and care following the procedure
Assures the safety of patients and other staff:
- Whenever possible responds to emergent or urgent medical situations in the Clinic
- Documents administration of drugs and other agents properly
- Documents all nursing care activities accurately and in a timely fashion
Provides care to patients as part of the overall care team:
- Provide psychosocial support to patients and families
- Informs charge nurse or nurse supervisor of high-risk situations or operational issues
- Participates in continuous performance improvement and quality efforts
- Ensures that proper techniques and practices are followed according to approved policies and procedures
Is Responsible For Maintaining And Developing Own Skills:
- Participates in continuing education programs
- Participates in peer evaluations and keeps current in area of expertise through journals, books, and nursing conferences
- Participates in professional organizations

HIPPA – Patient Privacy:
- Demonstrates knowledge and understanding of patient privacy rights
- Maintains confidentiality of all medical, financial, or other sensitive materials and information in printed, electronic or verbal form, which may jeopardize the privacy of patients
- Accesses and uses the minimum necessary patient identifiable information to perform job responsibilities and duties and only for authorized purposes
HIPPA – Employee Privacy:
- Demonstrates knowledge and understanding of, and maintains confidentiality of employee information and SCCA strategic plans and initiatives, financial information or other sensitive materials and information in printed, electronic or verbal form, which may jeopardize employee rights or organization’s operations
- Accesses and uses the minimum necessary employee and organization information to perform job responsibilities and duties and only for authorized purposes
Qualifications
Required:
- Nursing degree
- Current Washington State nursing license
- Current BLS AHA Health Provider Card (or equivalent course, such as by the American Red Cross) and renewal required every two years
- ACLS certification
- Successful completion of UWMC Sedation Training Program (must be completed within six months of hire)
- Recent experience PACU/ICU/ED/Endoscopy RNs with moderate sedation experience
Preferred:
- Bachelor of Science in Nursing
- Two years of nursing experience
- Recent ICU, PACU, Interventional Radiology or Emergency Department experience
- Oncology or transplant infusion experience
