OpenAI Legal plays an indispensable role in achieving OpenAI's mission by navigating cutting edge legal issues in the field of AI. Our Applied AI team is responsible for the safe development and commercialization of OpenAI's innovations, principally our OpenAI API. The Associate General Counsel, Applied AI, will own and lead all legal initiatives for this team. This role will report to the General Counsel, and frequently engage with senior leadership.

Your responsibilities will include:

• Lead the legal function for the Applied AI team, with a focus on operationalizing and scaling legal support for product development, partnership and commercialization efforts, crafting all associated legal strategies and processes and overseeing all related agreements.
• Build an elite and lean legal team for Applied AI by recruiting top in-house talent and managing external counsel for effective and efficient results.
• Advise the leadership team on Applied AI matters, with the objective of ensuring that any commercial successes continue to advance our core mission.
• Partner closely with the technical and product teams to proactively manage risks, identify legal issues and shape key decisions.

What we are looking for:

• The basics: JD from an accredited law school, license in good standing with the California Bar, 10+ years of legal experience and prior in-house experience at a reputable technology company.
• The specifics: Deep proficiency in licensing, IP and product counseling issues, a solid understanding of data privacy and security, regulatory compliance requirements and public policy considerations, and a track record of delivering measurable results.
• The standout: Prior in-depth experience in AI/ML legal issues, a technical background or other unusual attributes would be great to see!
