Position Summary
Marqeta is growing a Security Engineering team with the goal of setting a new industry standard for security in the payments space.
We are looking for a Lead Software Engineer (backend) who is interested in building a securable, scalable, easy-to-use platform for Identity and Access Management within Marqeta Services. You will work directly with other engineering teams to integrate with the services and tools you built, owning security end to end at Marqeta. Your projects will cross multiple technology stacks and services, including a variety of languages and frameworks.

What you'll do
- Build scalable IAM and Security platform services and libraries with a particular focus on creating reliable, robust software systems that fail gracefully
- Apply engineering principles from your professional experience when building the best software possible for the security organization as a whole
- Mentor junior engineers as they work closely with you day to day, learning from you and becoming the seasoned engineers they are destined to be
What we're looking for
- 5+ years of experience as an engineer with a Bachelor’s degree; or 2 years of experience with an advanced degree. In lieu of a degree, 8+ years of relevant experience may suffice.
- Experience designing, developing, and shipping large-scale products or services in Java and/or Go, however, we welcome experience in other programming languages.
- Experience with AWS cloud services or other cloud technologies such as Azure or GCP
- Experience with SQL or other data storage technologies
- A strong passion to write code with high quality and test coverage.
- Demonstrated experience working productively on cross-functional teams and taking a collaborative, team-oriented approach.
- Experience with software development practices like agile
- Experience mentoring other Engineers with proven ability to influence Managers and teammates with the development strategy while making technical trade-offs and navigating technical complexities
- The ability to demonstrate humility, empathy, and to take constructive feedback positively with a desire to grow in your career, learn, share ideas and help other grow and learn.
- The ability to listen to the needs of others and comprehend complex matters, articulate issues in a clear and concise manner, and present effectively in both oral and written presentations to all levels in the organization
Nice-to-haves
- Prior experience using mTLS, PKI and related technologies
- Prior experience in additional languages like python, golang, C, C++, or Rust
- Experience in Payments or Financial Services
- Knowledge of Identity and Access Management best practices and protocols, such as OAuth, OpenID Connect, SAML, MFA, and SCIM
- Understanding of OWASP Top 10, Application Security tooling, and Content Security Policies
- Experience with Kubernetes or related containerization technologies
