Job Description
Discord asks the world to Imagine a Place. However, our users don't just have to imagine - they get to build that place, too. Discord apps are the bridge that lets users move from imagining a place to experiencing it. The Apps and API team is looking for a Developer Advocate to help inspire, support, and educate our growing developer community. As a Developer Advocate at Discord, you will build meaningful relationships with our community by engaging with their questions and ideas, by speaking at events and workshops, and by communicating their pain-points and feedback to the rest of the Apps and API team.
How do I know this is for me?
You like to code. You like to chat. You like to chat about coding.
You have a technical background and are skilled in communicating and empathizing with developers. You love coding and thinking through advanced scenarios as much as you do communicating with a large audience and a variety of partners, both technical and non-technical.
You're a doer.
You know how to chase a good idea when you see it. Whether it's an idea for a new long-form blog post or a quick lil' demo you want to pull together, you aren't going to wait around for someone to give you approval to build what you need to do your job well.
Information synthesis is your middle name.
You're able to participate in many conversations without losing the thread to any one of them. You can recap the main points on each side of a debate, even when the conversation gets heated or stretches on for days. You know how to adjust the depth and breadth of the information you share with others to match the situational context and expectations of the audience.
What you'll be doing
- Be the voice that drives us to constantly improve the experience for developers on Discord
- Drive engagement in our community by writing documentation, crafting blog posts, and building code samples and demos to showcase Discord's extensibility
- Host community events, lead technical workshops, deliver talks, and find delightful, unique ways to bring new developers into the Discord developer ecosystem
- Become an expert resource for our developer community by continuously learning about our platform's capabilities and design patterns
- Collaborate with our Engineering, Product, Marketing, and other cross-functional teams to improve our developer experiences and grow the app ecosystem
- Identify opportunities to highlight unique apps and use-cases, develop new strategic partnerships, and invest in community-led projects
- Work with the other leads on the Apps & API team to define how our team can best work with our developer community, including using insights you gather to directly influence our product roadmap
What you should have
- 3+ years experience in developer advocacy, engineering, or other relevant technical experience
- Proven ability to discuss and explain complex technical subjects in simple, succinct language
- A strong understanding of API design principles and development best-practices
- Familiarity with JavaScript and/or Python
- Proven ability to collect, analyze, and discuss data in order to set and track performance against goals
- Experience working within cross-functional teams
- Confidence presenting to different types of audiences, large and small, virtual and in-person
- A passion for engaging deeply with other builders
Bonus Points
- Previous experience in a Developer Advocacy role
- Previous full-stack development experience
- Experience with Discord’s APIs
