The College of Education has an outstanding opportunity for an Academic Advisor for Undergraduate Programs to join their team. The
Academic Adviser will join colleagues to support our undergraduate programs: Early Childhood & Family Studies Teaching & Learning (ECFS); Education, Communities, & Organizations (ECO); Educational Studies (EDST); and the Education, Learning, & Society minor (ELS). The Academic Adviser will have the primary responsibility to provide a responsive, personalized, and highly student-centered level of service to undergraduate prospective students, and newly admitted and enrolled students. The academic adviser will also support the recruitment and admission process for undergraduate students. This work can be done through one-on-one and group sessions, community outreach, providing personalized referrals, and more. In addition, the academic adviser will connect with ECFS prospective students and support them through each step as they prepare for and apply to the ECFS major.
This position is housed in the Office of Student Services (OSS) and reports to the Assistant Director for Undergraduate Academic and Student Services. In addition, this position works closely with the Assistant Director of Academic & Student Service and the Lead Admissions and Outreach Adviser.
This position requires strong people skills and a desire to build relationships with prospective and current students, colleagues across UW, and other educational institutions. Our undergraduate student body is vibrant and diverse, and the ideal candidate will have a strong background in supporting all students, across intersecting identities including race, ethnicity, ability, socioeconomic status, gender, gender expression, age, sexual orientation, religion, country of origin, citizenship status, educational background, and language proficiencies.
This is a hybrid position that will work in-person on the UW Seattle Campus and have an opportunity for remote work within the regular work week. Our office is family friendly and supports employee well-being through continual leadership, learning, and development.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES The Academic Adviser will:
Engage in relationship-based advising with prospective education students, including UW and transfer students.
Support prospective students from initial inquiry to application to their chosen undergraduate major.
Provide prospective students with appropriate resources, tools, and advice for academic planning purposes.
Support the College’s marketing and communications staff in developing outreach materials that promote undergraduate programs.
Connect prospective students to the Office of Admissions, College of Education programs, Undergraduate Academic Affairs Advising, Office of Student Financial Aid, Disabilities Resources for Students, and other campus partners.
Provide advising to prospective, newly admitted, and enrolled ECFS students on undergraduate degree requirements with the goal of supporting the program’s student learning outcomes and the individual student’s professional and academic goals.
Provide one-on-one and group advising services and presentations, utilizing technology to organize and present information sessions for prospective students and new student orientations for ECFS students.
Provide ongoing feedback to ECFS program faculty and leadership in areas of program development, enrollment, and course scheduling; Collaborate with the Assistant Dean of Undergraduate Programs to manage course sequencing and scheduling.
Collaborate with the ECFS/ECE Experiential Learning Coordinator on efforts relating to community-based service learning for ECFS Teaching & Learning pathway students.
Create new content and maintain the ECFS Advising & Resource Center, assume shared responsibility for assessing and modifying/updating website content related to the major.
Communicate regularly with ECFS students via Canvas or SharePoint Announcements, listservs, social media, and/or other CRM systems or software technologies as appropriate.
Serve as ECFS program content expert in areas related to student experience and curriculum/requirements in relation to broader UW experience and requirements.
Support the advising of prospective, newly admitted, and enrolled ECFS, ECO, and EDST students.
Provide information and guidance to current undergraduate students to resolve unique problems or situations.
Work collaboratively with Undergraduate Academic Affairs (UAA), the Office of the Registrar, the Office of Student Financial Aid, and other campus services as appropriate.
Create and maintain student plan-of-study documents to support the successful completion of all Bachelor of Arts degree requirements.
Advise undergraduate students on the proper course selection/sequence using tools such as Degree Audit, UW Student Database, EARS, and/or other advising software.
Provide intensive, high-touch advising, and coaching to prospective and current students in need of additional support, utilizing campus resources as necessary to facilitate retention of students who are experiencing difficulties or not making satisfactory progress.
Facilitate connections between underrepresented minority students, international students, and the College’s Office of Student Diversity & Inclusion.
Document activities, data reports, surveys, and program surveys for prospective and current students in Canvas, and in CRM systems or other software technologies as appropriate.
Participate in regular Office of Student Services meetings and continuously collaborate with Office of Student Services staff to plan, promote, and execute annual events as needed.
Participate in regularly scheduled Undergraduate Programs meetings and continuously collaborate with the Assistant Dean of Undergraduate Programs to support faculty, staff, and students in the ECFS Teaching and Learning major.
In collaboration with the Assistant Director for Undergraduate Academic and Student Services, consistently monitor data related to student progress and engagement; respond and/or intervene as appropriate to facilitate retention of students who are experiencing difficulties or not making satisfactory progress.
In addition to the Academic Adviser responsibilities listed above, the Adviser will
Regularly train and provide guidance to student employees by focusing on student experience and holistic approaches when working with prospective students and students in the ECFS program.
Provide support, guidance, and consultation to other Office of Student Services Academic Advisers & Staff.
Serve on departmental, college, and/or university wide committees and represent the ECFS, Undergraduate Programs, and/or College of Education.
Initiate, lead, and execute events/initiatives that benefit ECFS students and/or the undergraduate programs.
Participate in ongoing professional development around equity, diversity, and inclusion and utilize information to advocate for systemic changes at the programmatic, departmental, college, and/or university wide level.
Maintain a caseload of ECFS students who need additional resources and services beyond academic advising, monitor their needs, and continuously be in touch with them and their respective instructors when needed.
Support the Lead Admissions and Outreach Adviser in helping prospective students seeking information and admission to the College of Education. This support includes in-person and online information sessions for small and large groups, along with individual appointments. It also includes handling email inquiries, phone calls, and organizing outreach events for currently enrolled UW students, high school students and their families, international students, and post-baccalaureate students.
Collaborate with the Assistant Director for Undergraduate Academic and Student Services to establish an expectation for all student employees to use a direct transformational service model when working with prospective students, campus visitors, and UW students in person, on the phone, email, or via online.
Foster and support a culture of collaboration, teamwork, trust, and mutual respect by building relationships with colleagues at the College of Education and external partners.
Work collaboratively as a member of the undergraduate team to develop policies, practices, and procedures that center students and provide a consistent experience across the majors and minor.
Perform other duties as assigned.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
Bachelor’s degree, to include a minimum of three years of experience working with students in recruiting, advising, counseling, or teaching capacity.
Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS
Experience working with coworkers and students from diverse backgrounds, across intersecting identities including race, ethnicity, ability, socioeconomic status, gender, gender expression, age, sexual orientation, religion, country of origin, citizenship status, educational background, and language proficiencies.
Demonstrated ability to use relational databases, web-based technologies, and an ability to integrate these technologies into educational and student-support environments.
Demonstrated ability to create working relationships characterized by a high level of acceptance, cooperation, and mutual respect.
Ability to use office productivity tools and communication tools (e.g. Outlook, SharePoint, Google Apps) and relational CRM databases (e.g. Slate, TargetX, others).
Open to development and continual learning and display an ongoing commitment to learning and self-improvement.
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS
Two years demonstrated experience in administering entry or advising departments in higher education.
Familiarity with policies and procedures of the University of Washington, Washington State Community and Technical College system, or other institutions of higher education.
Graduate degree in higher education, counseling, student affairs, public administration, or a related field of study.
Demonstrated experience in developing efficient and lean processes at a departmental level.
CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT
This role is hybrid in nature with occasional travel required for in-person meetings, events, and conferences. All members of the undergraduate advising team are required to work in person 3 days per week.
